Jovica Stojanovic

Department:

Sector for mineral processing and inorganic technologies
Occupation or position held: Research associate in the Applied Mineralogy Unit and the Laboratory for Geological Exploration

Occupational field: Graduate engineer of Geology for Mineralogy and Crystallography and M.Sc. in Mineralogy, Ph.D. in Crystallography

Professional activities:

1.) X-ray powder and single-crystal diffraction analysis of minerals (ores, flotation products, rock forming minerals, ect.), artificial materials (ceramics, glasses, alloys, cements, smelting products, hydrothermally synthesized single-crystals, ect.), crystal structure refinement by the Rietveld method, qualitative and quantitative mineralogical analyses, defining micro-structural parameters (strain, crystallite size). Hydrothermal synthesis of inorganic compounds.

2.) Also familiar with Electron Microscopy (SEM & TEM), Electron Microprobe Analysis (EMPA), DTA, TGA, IR and RAMAN spectroscopy, Heating Microscopy.

3.) Optical microscopy (mineralogy) of metallic (ore) minerals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Sb, As, W, Au, Ag, PGE, Fe, Ni, Co), non-metallic (rock forming) minerals, and artificial materials (ceramics, glasses, alloys, cements and smelting products).

4.) Genesis and paragenesis of polymetallic ore deposits (Pb-Zn-Ag; Cu-Au, Pb-Zn-Au, Fe-Co-Ni with PGM, Pb-Zn-W, Sb-Pb-Zn, Sb-W … ).

5.) Applied mineralogy in mineral processing.
6.) Terrain work and geologocal sampling.

I am particularly interested in both powder and single-crystal x-ray diffraction and the Rietveld method and their use for studying both minerals and synthetic products. I also have pretty diverse interests in many areas of both mineralogy and crystallography (natural materials such as ore minerals-sulphosalts, gold, silver and platinum group minerals, silicate minerals and rocks-zeolitic tuffs (mostly clinoptilolite-heulandite and analcime tuffs), artificial materials such as ceramics, special kinds of glasses, semiconductor materials (my graduate work is dealing with B-doped PbTe semiconductor, its structural and microstructural features using Rietveld analysis), cements etc.).

Education: Faculty of Mining and Geology of the University of Belgrade,
1995-2000-B.Sc. in Geology (X semesters, main course: mineralogy and crystallography).
2001-2005-M.Sc. in Mineralogy (IV semesters, main course: silicates and non-silicates).
2005-2010-Ph.D. in Crystallography

Research Work:

The B.Sc. thesis under the title: “Structural and microstructural characteristics of synthetic B-doped PbTe” was defended on 5. 6. 2000. The M.Sc. thesis under the title: “Mineral paragenesis of the „Nova jama“ ore zone from the Rudnik ore field”, which was a product of the Project conducted by the Ministry of Science (No. TR 6723.B) was obtained on 16. 12. 2005. Shortened form of the M.Sc. thesis is published in the “Neues Jahrbuch für Mineralogie” journal as a paper named “Mineralogy of W-Pb-Bi ores from Rudnik Mt., Serbia” (N. Jb. Miner. Abh., Vol. 182/3, pp. 299-306). The Ph.D. thesis under the title: “Hydrothermal syntheses and single-crystal structures in the CdO–MO–X2O5–(H2O)–(NH4+) system, (2+ = Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn;5+ = As, P)” was defended on 29.3.2010. So far I have published three articles from the thesis (Acta Crystallographica C, C64, 2008, i82-i86, i91-i94 and C66, 2010, i55-i57). As a Ph.D. scholarship holder within the scope of the project “Human Resources Development Programme for selected South-East European (SEE) Universities 07/08” I stayed in Vienna from 1.10.2007 to 1.3.2008 at the Institute for Mineralogy and Crystallography in Vienna under supervision of Prof. Dr Ekkehart Tillmanns. The aim of my stay was to synthesize new compounds in the CdO–MO–X2O5–(H2O)–(NH4+) system, (2+ = Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn;5+ = As, P) using the hydrothermal technique and if possible to investigate their crystal structures using single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
During my stay in Vienna I was working with single-crystal X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope equipped with EDS (SEM-EDS), Electron Microprobe (EMPA), and Furrier Transformation Infra-Red Spectrometer (FT-IR). I have broadened knowledge of working with CCD single-crystal diffractometer, where I spent most of my time. I attended the seminar lectures held by diverse invited guest speakers. Moreover, within these seminars I gave one lecture (on 7th December 2007) under the title: "Crystal-chemical investigations of the compounds from the CdO-MO-X2O5-H2O-NH4 system (M2+ = Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, X5+ = As, P)".
